Prelude
When Kyra let the space lemurs into the house--which, though her parents couldn't fathom, was hilarious-- she didn't think it would be an invitation to Sparvard Academy, the tragic equivalent of space prison for teenagers who just want to have a bit of fun. But not to worry, Kyra was sure that she would turn the rusty lump of metal into someplace truly worth living.
Spoiler alert, Sparvard was NOT someplace truly worth living, not even a little bit. Even the decorations know it, filled with greys and blacks promising nothing but monotony and doom.
When her escort ship landed on the satellite, she couldn't help but feel out of place in her bright red bomber jacket, purple sailor pants, neon blue t-shirt, and shiny accessories. She grinned at the thought, she almost wondered if she should take out her Purple Cape that shifted between hues of reds and blues depending on how the light hits it. But before she could get it out, a willowy figure with small round glasses and a clipboard approached her.
"Kyra Shattersteal?" the woman said in a monotone. She was wearing a black blazer and a pencil skirt with heels, and her greying hair was tied up in a high bun.
Kyra smiled her most charming smile, "That's me," she said, "Nice to meet you!" she held out her hand to shake, but the woman just tsked.
"You will be given two pairs of new uniforms which you will wear for classes, and two pairs of loungewear for the rest, as well as a formal black dress when appropriate."
Kyra was taken aback, "Oh, uh, I'll take the uniform, but I'm good on the loungewear," Kyra gestured to her suitcase once again attempting her friendly smile, but the woman just tsked again. "Or--Or not, I'll take the loungewear," she sputtered.
Kyra didn't like this woman. She always had a way with people, but somehow this woman was... difficult. Kyra took the clothes and promised herself that she would get this woman, whom she later found out was her headmaster, to like her.
Unfortunately, Kyra Shattersteal couldn't keep that promise.

(PS. This started as a D&D backstory for my character Kyra. But she's so voicy, I want to write her in some stories. This first excerpt is over a year old, and doesn't fit my style anymore, so I'm just going to let it be a prologue :))
